Ski season ends at Aspen

The last bonus weekend at Aspen Highlands was so great. Just perfect spring skiing. A band played at the Merry-Go-Round both days contributing to a relaxed laid-back atmosphere. Guys outdid each other off a jump at the base of Scarlett’s – my favourite was a double backflip which the guy did several times! Another highlight was the paraglider who started from partway down Scarlett’s and landed right by the Merry-Go-Round…. I hiked the Bowl Saturday – here is the view from the top to the left of Pyramid Peak.

More powder at Aspen Highlands

It seems the snow will never stop falling! Monday brought face shots down Ozone – one of the most awesome runs of the season for me. I think there were about 137 skiers on the whole mountain. The word spread fast and Tuesday saw about 2500 skier visits! Maroon Bowl (adjacent to Highlands Bowl) slid overnight – photos below. I have never seen such an extensive slide before. The fracture line looked at least 20 feet deep in places and it pretty much slid to dirt. The second picture shows the Maroon Bells in the background. Lots of lovely new fluffy light powder today and again, like Monday, not so many skiers so more untracked lines in Ozone around 2:30pm!!!!

Schneetag at Snowmass

Yesterday was Schneetag at Snowmass…. One of the main attractions is watching teams of four, each with a theme, do a short skit then attempt to cross an icy pond in a craft of their making. Very entertaining, And it was a cold powder day albeit sunny. This year there were 12 teams with themes ranging from “Dope Strong” complete with yellow jersey clad bike rider riding a bike equipped with an iv bag to the “Master Baiters”, a team of fishermen…. Two other teams are pictured below before they performed.

Aspen Highlands again – the Bowl and the Bear Tree

Another great powder day at Highlands yesterday. The Bowl looked very windy and visibility was variable as clouds kept coming and going but we hiked it anyway and were rewarded with an awesome run down G6 in mostly untracked snow. Below is a photo of the ridge before we climbed! I also took a few runs in Deep Temerity and took a photo of one of my favourite trees. you can see the bear claw marks in it and at the top there is an “eye” with marks that look just like eyelashes!

Winter Powder in April in Aspen

After enjoying a winter powder (light and fluffy) day in Winter Park last Sunday I was happy to get an amazing powder day in at Aspen Highlands yesterday! I was not going to hike the bowl but met up with a colleague who was on her second lap so how could I not go with her (without looking completely wimpy)! So glad I did. A few face shots down G-8 made me a very happy girl!

My new car…. I wish!

This morning at Buttermilk I was astonished to see this beautiful Ferrari in the parking lot….. wow!!!!! Amazing that it somehow got to the parking lot without getting a single speck of snow or dirt on it as if it were airlifted in 🙂

Aspen Highlands on Sunday morning

I could not believe that at 9:34am I was the first person to ski down Sodbuster and there was still no one in sight! I took this picture from the old traverse then got first tracks all the way down Fran’s Love to the catwalk leading to the Deep Temerity chair…. where was everyone????

HIghlands Bowl skiing great!

The snowcat is now running out to the Bowl and, being a lazy skier, I had hiked up to Boxcar once this season without the cat and decided I would wait for the cat to be running next time! So yesterday it was sunny and warm – I hiked up to Ozone – what great snow!!!
