Second Saturday’s in Basalt

We needed some dancing after all that mac and cheese so headed for Basalt where the “Second Saturday” was in full swing. Carbondale does “First Friday” every month so Basalt has a mini-festival every second Saturday of the month in the late afternoon to  evening. The band was great (“Already Gone”) and lots of people turned out to enjoy the evening. I watched a very talented artist create a picture on a heated plate (around 150 degrees) using pigmented beeswax. She then imprinted her design onto special Japanese paper. My photo does not do it justice – the colors were beautiful.

The Second Annual Aspen Mac and Cheese Competition

What a great idea! I didn’t get to the first one last year so wasn’t sure what to expect. About 20 local restaurants made a signature Mac and Cheese dish served in small compostable cups to the excited crowd! Recipes ranged from truffle mac and cheese with mushrooms to lobster mac and cheese to ancho chilli mac and cheese with lots of other really imaginative recipes…. who would have thought there were so many ways to prepare this. My daughter and I just loved to sample as many of the non-red meat/bacon ones as we could find! I think the elk/venison recipe was popular with the meat lovers as was a jalapeno and bacon one. Then one voted by texting the restaurant code into a central number. Fun and yummy – we are already planning to do it again next year 🙂

Steve Miller Band at Jazz Aspen Snowmass

I freely admit that I still own Steve Miller Band songs on actual vinyl records. The guy next to me said he still has them on 8-track. Oh my! It was so awesome to see them in concert here at JAS this last Friday. What a great band….

Whole Foods finally opened today :)

After a very long delay the much-awaited Whole Foods opened today in Basalt. This may not seem like a big deal to many of you but it really is a huge deal here. I went and looked around – I have never seen a supermarket so busy! Personally I am thrilled with the selections available and am very excited to have this new shopping choice in our area. Check out the full parking lot!

Hiking to Crested Butte

Crested Butte is so far away in the winter as one must drive around via Gunnison. In summer the drive over Kebler Pass is much shorter but still takes me about 2.5 hours from Basalt. So it is so great to be able to just hike over and the scenery is so beautiful.

This time I went with a friend via East Maroon Pass coming back over West Maroon Pass the next day. Neither of us had hiked East Maroon before and we were a bit unprepared for how much longer it takes. Also it is not nearly as well sign posted as West Maroon and we were definitely in danger of going the wrong way at  least three times. Luckily we chose the right way each time and arrived at the shuttle pick up location only 10 minutes late! It took us 8 hours and 40 minutes from the trailhead to the shuttle…. Dolly’s Mountain Shuttle service was great and even brought a very welcome beer along with sodas! Although much longer this route was not nearly as steep. It was interesting to me to note the connection with the Triangle Pass and Conundrum Valley trails. Now I want to hike over via Conundrum but that would definitely require an overnight camp and I would not be able to bring my dog as dogs are not allowed in the upper Conundrum Valley.

Being a little tired from the hike over we took about 5.5 hours to return over West Maroon. There were sooooo many more people along this trail, we were just amazed at how many people we encountered as we had hardly seen anyone hiking East Maroon. We had perfect weather both days – so lucky!

Lake Powell

Lake Powell (also known as Glen Canyon) is about a 6 hour drive from Aspen/Basalt. We have been lucky enough to go a few times over the last 15 years but this was the first time we got invited to stay on a houseboat. The houseboats are amazingly luxurious – quite different to the houseboats we rented as college students in Australia! We did take our tent also and I was glad as we actually preferred sleeping in our tent because the houseboat got quite warm at night. Lake Powell has stunning scenery and we had so much fun waterskiing, jetskiing, wakeboarding, surfing behind the boats, tubing, cliffjumping and just enjoying being away from cell phone and internet coverage. There are places with coverage but we were not in them.

Basalt Music Wednesdays

We finally made it to our local music series! This week was held in Lions Park downtown. We saw so many friends and neighbors – this is such a fun community thing to do on a Wednesday evening.

Waterskiing at Ruedi

This weekend I was lucky enough to be invited to go sailing on Saturday on a friend’s 25 foot yacht at the Aspen Yacht Club at Ruedi and then waterskiing at Ruedi on Sunday! It has been so windy that the last two times I have had a chance to ski I decided it was too rough and just enjoyed watching other people tube and wake board so it was great to get a ski in yesterday!

Cathedral Lake

Another beautiful sunny day so we decided to hike to Cathedral Lake. This stunning alpine lake is about 11 miles up Castle Creek road just past the ghost town of Ashcroft. The hike is about 3 miles each way and fairly steep in places. It took us almost exactly four hours including a lunch break by the lake. I had only hiked here in the fall before so the waterfalls on the way were a nice surprise. The wildflowers were gorgeous and there were so many different types. Different colours of Columbines and Indian Paintbrush also…

Free summer music around Aspen/Basalt/Snowmass

Summer means free music to enjoy! As well as local festivals like Strawberry Days (Glenwood Springs)and  Mountain Fair (Carbondale) there is loads of free music almost every week. These photos are from Crown Mountain Park on Friday night. Basalt hosts free music every Wednesday alternating between Lions Park and Triangle Park. Starting next week Snowmass Village hosts the ever wildly popular free music Thursday nights. The 10th annual Sopris Music Festival is in Carbondale this weekend. Dancing opportunities abound 🙂
