Mountain Rescue Aspen in New HQ

If you need rescuing around here these are the guys and girls who will be doing it! An all-volunteer force, they will put their own lives at risk to get you out of pretty much anywhere. MRA just got a new beautiful headquarters and also a brand new shiny helicopter. Often they are assisted by BlackHawks so on opening day at the new HQ there were three helicopters for kids to swarm into and around. Because MRA had needed to use the MRA helicopter that very morning we were treated to watching a landing in the field during the opening. It is a good idea to buy a Colorado Search and Rescue card if heading into the wilderness – proceeds go to aiding costs of rescue.

Jas Aspen Snowmass

I really wanted to see Earth Wind and Fire – my daughter really wanted to see One Republic! Luckily they were both playing on the Saturday so I volunteered to work Thursday and Friday to get two tix for Saturday πŸ™‚ Moon Taxi was an unexpected pleasure before Earth Wind and Fire. My daughter danced with me all through Earth Wind and Fire then I was really amazed at how great One Republic are live – way better than what I had heard on the radio! Fantastic performances from awesome musicians….

Another new Crossfit

Now Basalt is getting its very own new Crossfit! Crossfit Omphalos is now at Southside. I have many friends who are Crossfit addicts but have yet to try it myself. Nolan and Kay Parker are super nice so maybe I will soon πŸ™‚

Starwood at Aspen

Well, Starwood at Basalt! The well known local band formed in the early 70’s regrouped with many of their famous members including Bobby Mason, Bryan Savage, Hayden Gregg and so many others to play a well-attended concert in Basalt at Willits. At one point I counted 11 people on stage playing with about 5 lead guitarists!!!! An amazing night was had by all with much merriment and dancing.

Powers Art Center – the Valley’s other Art Museum!

For everyone who doesn’t like the new Aspen Art Museum whether it is because of the “exhibitions”, the building itself, the loss of all those parking spaces or any of a long list of reasons take time out to visit the Powers Art Center located close to Carbondale. The building designed by architect Hiroshi Nanamori is beautiful, set in a serene setting overlooking Mount Sopris with views to Chair Mountain and Sunlight. The reflective pool in front captures the essence of the surroundings….. just standing there is a calming experience. To get there look for mile marker 13 as you are headed downvalley from Aspen or Basalt approaching Carbondale on Highway 82. The turn in to the Center is on the right directly after MM13.

Powers Art Center is dedicated to the memory of John G. Powers as a Museum and Study Center for Jasper Johns Limited Edition Works on paper. The ceramic works by Takashi NakazatoΒ  are displayed throughout the Museum and the Library. Future exhibits of additional Jasper Johns works are planned to rotate annually. Well worth a visit.

American Lake

Is it really three years since I hiked to American Lake? That’s crazy!!! I think last time I posted I said it is 11 miles out of Aspen but actually I think it is only about 8 miles up Castle Creek road on the right. This time it started raining right after we got to the lake and so we made the round trip from the trailhead a little faster! 3 hours instead of 3.5 πŸ™‚

Telluride again!!!!

Wow – having never been here in summer before this is the second time – see post before last! Just over two weeks later and still lots of waterfalls! There is a really cool hike from right in town called the Jed Wiebe Trail that takes you up opposite the gondola side and gives a fantastic view. Close to the beginning of this hike is another waterfall πŸ™‚

Thomas Lakes

This is one of my favourite local hikes. The trailhead is about 20 minutes from Basalt. From the Emma turnoff head to West Sopris Creek road and follow it until it becomes unpaved, keep going until you are almost at the Prince Creek road intersection ( you will feel like you are at the top of a hill). Take the dirt road on left to Dinkle Lake and you will see the trailhead to Thomas Lakes on the right with parking in a corral on the left before you get to Dinkle Lake. It is about a 2 hour hike to the lakes. The first one is green and shallow, then you will come to a big blue lake, then if you keep going past the camp sites you will come to another big lake bordered by pine trees right before the ascent to the summit of Mount Sopris.

Telluride!

I have never been to Telluride in the summer although I LOVE to ski there in winter! It takes about 4 hours to get to Telluride from Basalt, 4.5 if leaving from Aspen. Going over McClure Pass to Delta is really pretty, taking you through the winery and orchard districts by Paonia and Hotchkiss. From there to Montrose then Ridgeway then over the Dallas Divide. The San Juans were absolutely spectacular seen from the Divide road….. In Telluride the waterfalls were amazing. One huge waterfall at the end of the canyon is perfectly framed by the main street then to the left of that is the Bridal Veil Falls with a hydro plant perched improbably right on the edge. If you drive up to the plant you can keep hiking along the stream for a really long way with lots more waterfalls to see. Just beautiful.
