Exciting Market News!

Every month I update the “Market Reports and Newsletter” page on this blog (see tab at top). Today I noticed also how dramatically the charts at the bottom of the page have changed in all four markets represented: Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. Over the time shown prices decreased while inventory rose in all 4 markets. Now you can see this has been completely reversed. Prices are climbing while inventory is dropping. The two lines in each chart show the story! The red line shows inventory, the black line is median price.

Then sailing – what a great day!

Hiking back down again a friend texted to invite me sailing at Reudi – here is a photo of the Aspen Yacht Club taken from the marina. It was a beautiful day for sailing and the scenery was stunning but I only took this one photo – more next time šŸ™‚

Baby caterpillars being born!

Hiking Arbaney-Kittle I noticed what looked like caterpillars caught in a web. I stopped to see why there were so many in that one place then realized they were being born, struggling out of the web then getting bigger as they lay around close by. Some had made it to adjacent leaves but most were still on the web/cocoon. I watched a tiny one making his way out pausing to rest between his efforts and in the ten minutes I was there he made it almost all the way! You can see him on the right of the web in the second photo. Cycle of life – next to be a butterfly….

Riding, waterfalls and waterskiing!

Looking at my post from this weekend last year I see that we went rafting and skiing all in the same weekend. There was lots of water and lots of snow. A very different story this year.

The section we rafted this time last year at around 30000 cfs (Ruby Horsethief) is now running under 4000 cfs. The upper Colorado (Yarmony) where we rafted May 23, 2011 at around 4500 cfs is now at 393 cfs – Yikes. And there is definitely no skiing on Aspen Mountain which is currently open for frisbee golf!

So we went riding at Mt. Sopris and did the Hay Park Trail which runs off the Thomas Lakes trail on Saturday, then went camping with friends at Rifle Falls on Sunday. Monday we met up with other friends at Rifle Gap for possible waterskiing. It was a bit too choppy for me to ski but the kids had fun tubing and surfing and Mike did some waterskiing and surfing too. Rifle Gap is pretty but I forgot to take any pictures so here are pictures of riding and the falls:)

Wildflowers already!

Hiking Arbaney-Kittle trail this morning there are so many beautiful wildflowers out already. Right after the spot where most people turn around is a beautiful little wild garden with Capitol Peak to Sopris Mountain as a backdrop. This morning it also came complete with a beautiful black and orange butterfly who would not stay still long enough to be photographed! This side of the valley is almost desert-like (with small cactus around) whereas the other side is much more like IĀ  remember Switzerland with grassy alpine meadows flecked with impressive light-coloured boulders and lots of little streams – the contrast is quite dramatic. So these flowers are really special here on the desert side.

Arbaney-Kittle this morning

The view from Arbaney-Kittle trail right now is stunning. On the left of the photo is Capitol Peak – one of Colorado’s fourteeners – and on the right is Mt Sopris which is over 12,000 feet. You can see the valley floor – so green right now. It took me about 40 minutes to hike up from the valley floor to where I took this photo. From this point one can also see into the Frying Pan valley. I never cease to be amazed by how beautiful it is up here.

Closing day at Aspen Mountain

Wow – what a difference a day makes! After a long wait for new snow it arrived on time for closing day! We raced up to Aspen to get some fresh tracks. Unbelievably there was pretty much no-one there – I was expecting a line at the gondola but there wasn’t one! Free parking as it was a Sunday and my daughter and I had so much fun making our own brand new tracks. I think 13-16 inches was reported but at times I was up to mid-thigh and my daughter was up to her waist. The photos show the difference from yesterday to today…. both taken from the gondola looking back at Aspen with Kleenex corner on left of photos.

End of Season at Buttermilk

The last day of the season ended with a great Red Bull party! DJ Z-trip was incredible and lots of people had a ripper time dancing in the snow. The stage for the DJ unfolded somehow right out of the Red Bull tour bus like something out of Transformers! I think Buttermilk should have lots more parties like this šŸ™‚
